IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Several members seem to have problems with their CD/DVD drives at the moment. As far as I know, there is no magic solution but you could try some or all of the following: - 1. See if there is an updated driver or updated firmware for your drive at Vaio-Link. Some Sony drives are re-badged from other manufacturers and you may have to search for updated downloads. For example, if you have a Sony DW-D56A drive, you can get a firmware download from HERE (Use PFS2). Many other drives are also supported on this site. 2. Use System Restore to return your Vaio to the configuration when it was last working normally. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore - choose a restore date before you had the problem. 3. Look in Device Manager to see if there are any errors against your DVD/CD-ROM drive. Start -> Right-Click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager - expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives and check the status. If there is an Error Code or a yellow triangle with a ! or ? come back here with the number and we may be able to help. 4. If there is no error and the drive is reported as working normally, try Uninstalling the drive by right-clicking on it in Device Manager and choosing Uninstall. Re-booting your Vaio will reinstall the drivers. 5. Try some different software to read/write your discs and see if that works. Also try a different brand of discs - Sony, TDK and Verbatim seem favourites. 6. Try a liquid lens cleaner on the lens and polish with a microfibre cloth ? this can sometimes help. 7. If your drive works with either CDs or DVDs only make sure the ribbon cable is not preventing the reader head from moving freely - check that the laser head in the drive can move freely for the whole range of its travel. The disc information is held on the outside tracks for DVDs and the inner tracks for CDs. 8. Last resort is to perform a full C:\ Drive System Recovery from your Recovery Discs. Make sure you back up all your Data as the contents of C:\ will be lost and your Vaio returned to the factory configuration. If none of these work, you may have a hardware problem and you need to contact Vaio-Link. There is no point contacting them until you have carried out a Drive C:\ Recovery as this is the first thing they will ask you to do.  ---------------------------------------- Join us on our Facebook Page Club Vaio Experts |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> I have just purchased a Vaio VGN-FE28B. After about a week the DVD drive no longer responds and is not visible on My Computer. Under Device Manager there is a Device Status: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) I have tried restoring back to the date I purchased the machine but the restore fails. The DVD is a DW-G520A. I cannot use the restore DVDs that I created as the DVD is not responding. Have searched on the support site for the code and driver updates but to no avail. Any suggestions??? |

My Pioneer DVR-K16M writes 1X speed when I use 16x speed DVD-R otherwise with 8X speed it works normally. This should be fixed with an upgrade since I previously had these problems with other drives manufactured before certain media is in the market. I called SONY no update and PIONEER is not liable since the drive although being a pioneer is not sold by them but by sony. So Sony is to fix this problem, which apperantly THEY STILL DIDN'T. Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Approximately a month ago I purchased a Vaio - VGN N11S, but like a couple of other responses so far on this thread, after a couple of weeks I've stared to have problems with the CD/DVD R drive. As I'm not writing this from my notebook I'm afraid I can't mention what the drive is. I backed up my laptop before I started having the problems and I've even downloaded the updates. After logging a call to the support team, I'm still finding I'm having problems. Is this a problem through-out Sony? As a consumer in the UK I'm entitled to a refund or new replacement of my notebook surely. |

Would be glad to hear if owner of same model have experienced the same issues, I am sending the unit for repair.  |

It has now started to blurp out the following error, when I try to burn: Unable to recover TOC My drive is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S, with DMA = On. EDIT: I have no reading problems on the drive, everything is fine in that department. I only use Verbatim DVD-R 16X Media. I have tried re-installing Nero, turning the IMAPI CD-Burning service on/off and finally updating the firmware of my burner, still no luck. Got any ideas? It is kinda getting on my nerves, since I have a lot of data I need to back-up. Thank you in advance. |

Also CD recording has got some strange very high sound. Some CDs were nonusable. Also, DVDs created earlier are very hard to read. It is SONY DVD RW DW-D56A. I use VGN-FS195VP. I tried to reainstall the system. I updated the driver from Vaios homepage. I have tried several types of DVDs. Any idea? |

I presume TOC stands for Table of Contents. A failure to read this can be caused by: - 1. The disc being copied is encrypted and copy protected. 2. As you say, DMA not enabled - make sure it is actually ON as the setting is "DMA if available". If not there is a Registry Fix to "Enable DMA" or "Force DMA". I haven't used it but I'll see if I can find any details. 3. Burning faster than the drive can cope with - try 4X or 2X I would also try DVD+R discs and see if they work. Problems like this are often media related. It does sound like the DVD is not being finallised. Two thoughts here. They won't solve the problem but it may identify the cause: - 1. Try putting the disc back in the drive. In Nero, hit the 'Burn' button without selecting anything to burn but making sure the 'Finalise Disc' box is checked. 2. Try finalising the disc in a TV DVD Recorder or another drive. As I have said before, there is a suspicion that all these DVD drive problems have been caused by recent Updates from Microsoft as they try to make their DRM mechanisms more secure - difficult to prove, but you may wish to do a System Restore to a time before the problem started. ---------------------------------------- Join us on our Facebook Page Club Vaio Experts |

The DVD+R could maybe work, but since it has worked fine with quite a few DVD-R, it would be a bit strange for it to change it's mind, all of the sudden. I will, however, try to burn something as old school as a cd-rom tomorrow and see if that works. The MS/DRM angle actually makes a lot of sense to me (remembering that our Windows' might be getting prepared for the Zune software, which I understand is to be fairly DRM-heavy). I might just need to investigate what I have in fact downloaded and installed from MS lately, to figure out if anything has lurked past my critical eye. The stuff I want to burn is not DRM protected, as it is my own produce, but DRM might still be the issue on this one. I shall report back when I have tried to burn a cd, my good sir. Thank you |

Than no2. and again no 1. Before I had version no 3. I have noticed that after I have upgraded to FW no 3 my computer goes on very slowly even I downgraded to FW 1 or 2 (I upgraded also BIOS, and Nvidia card - maybe thats why it goes slowly on from "Welcome" screeen). I have purchased the notebook in May 2005, in Sweden. I have no warranty any more. Any idea? MX Motion? |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Hi, everytime I mess about with firmware etc for a little while after my start up is slow too, something maybe not to be too worried about, I've personally never flashed my BIOS as I felt this was a firmware issue with the drive itself and not the computer at fault so I cant really comment on that Ok this is what I would personally do.. (1) Restore the PC to "factory spec" (2) Allow the pc's applications to bed in, such as the Vaio Launcher, Norton AV etc so that no other applications are wanting to complete their install/recovery (3) Another thing I did was to download a RPC2 removal program LtnRPC which is available for download at most locations, now tread carefully as I would never suggest you loose your warrenty as that is what you will do if you use 3rd party software to mess with your exsisting drive firmware. I have used this completely as a work around in order to get MY laptop working as it should.... and then i re enabled the region settings again shortly afterwards (4) The install the PFS-1 - not forgetting to disable all other programs as you would if you were using the Sony update. (5) Try PFS-1, It personally did not work for me but try it all the same... attempt a burn or something. (6) Try PFS-2, this is where my drive roared back into operational condition... a great day indeed. Get back to me if you need Motion |

Restart the laptop after this has been done. Another thing I did was to download a RPC2 removal program LtnRPC which is available for download at most locations, now tread carefully as I would never suggest you loose your warrenty as that is what you will do if you use 3rd party software to mess with your exsisting drive firmware. I have used this completely as a work around in order to get MY laptop working as it should.... and then i re enabled the region settings again shortly afterwards Now I would begin the process of using the 3rd party firmware updates... Im assuming that you have unpacked them as they come as a rar file. Start with PFS-1, this totally failed for me, but maybe try a burn at this stage anyway. Then try PFS-2, at this stage my optical drive burnt like a forrest fire, like a whippet I tells you Also try as mentioned to clean the drive with an appropiate cleaner disc.. Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Hi, Ok this is what I would do personally IF what Blencogo has suggested and it has not worked Also before I mention what I would do again this will void a warrenty and you do so at your own risk (1)Download and unpack from the .rar file the three stock.exe's for the drive. The reason for unpacking them now is that when your pc is returned to factory configuration you cannot unpack the rar. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/dvdrw_slimtype/stock/Sony.D56A.PFS1-PFS2-PFS3.stock.rar Also find and download a RPC2 removal program LtnRPC. Unpack if neccesary. And then store the files on a usb memory or external HDD or disc. If you are burning to disc you might want to fill it up with any pictures or other media you want to keep. (2) Perform a full C:\ Drive System Recovery using your Recovery Discs. Make sure you back up all your Data as the contents of C:\ will be lost. (3) Allow all the pre installed software that comes with the laptop to iinstall itself correctly, Vaio Launcher, Norton IS etc so that nothing else wants to install itself. (4) Restart the PC. (5) Place the saved files from section (1) on to your desktop. At this point you might want to try the RPC removal tool LtnRPC. Sometimes it says that it has not done anything but upon checking the properties of the optical drive its deffo removed the RPC-2. Try and burn at this point.. sometimes I had luck with this alone. If still not working properly proceed : (6) Re-enable the region settings for the drive using the Ltn-RPC. Now once upon a time there was an "issue" with Sony placing a type of encryption on their discs XCP i think it was called. Ages ago I came across this issue with my laptop, XCP had reduced my drive to a similar state so I decided try this as well after I tried the LtnRPC program, I was desparate at this moment.. i really wanted to fix my laptop: http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html Completely uninstall the XCP software and associated content protection files. (7) Disable all the things you are meant to do as if you were following the instructions for a Sony Updates firmware installation. Disable the Anti-V, screensaver, hibernation etc. (8) Flash the PFS-1 on to the drive and restart. (9) Attempt a burn or something, this failed for me. (10) Flash the PFS-2 on to the drive and attempt a burn. Thats all I can suggest. If not then It looks like you may have to consider a replacement drive. may the force be with you. Motion |

It also can be seen that in Nero the drive's buffer always fluctuates between 5 and 100%. I have tried to reinstall it and to flash it, but the prog says that it cant find the device, but sony says thats normal if the current firmware is installed. What can I do? Burning a four gig DVD takes !!!! two !!!!! hours. I hope you can help me. Thanks!! |

It is, maybe, the problem that Microsoft Windows XP has with some software in Service Pack 2, e.g. some Adobe applications. www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/328585.html gives a solution. I found in Http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883523 a website in Dutch describing the problem of the not recognized rewritable-station in Windows XP Service Pack 2. There must be one in English too. Microsoft offers a supporting hotfix, which is not tested yet 100%. Did anyone of you contact Microsoft Product Support Services to get the hotfix? |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Well I just spent 3 days trying to sort the problem with my VGN-S3HP DVD combo drive ( matshita UJ-822Da ) it refused to see any dvd -R disks and fell over when burning DVD +R disks , after much searching I decided to bite the bullit and 20 min later after talking to a drone on the sony help desk telling me what I needed to do i asked how much to send my laptop back for repair ....... Guess whos out of warranty so £249 was the quote .... This I declined so being a computer techie and armed with my trusty Phillips screwdriver I decided to ppull the offending laptop appart and see if I could get to the route of the cause which I did. Generally after almost 2 years of being used here their and everywhere dumped on desks and thrown into the back of the car droped on the floor the plug in the back of the drive had worked slightly loose so even though the drive read some disks it was not happy with alot of them , after generally cleaning out the inside of the laptop and reattaching everything securly I powered up and burnt a DVD -r recovery set followed by a DVD +R set and just to make sure a set of CD recovery disks. So 1 hour lost lunch break or £249 to Sony to do pretty much nothing and im going to guess at a HD wipe for fun for them because it seems a standard thing to do when returning these things other than that im fully up and running and happy again. Words of caution though if your not a trained techie DO NOT open your computer and take it appart. Unless you're just plane crazy then if you do bust it you only have your self to blame... ----------------------------------------  |

For months I have been having the problem with my DVD drive that it could read any DVD-RW or CD-RW, but couldn't load any DVD-R or CD-R, and answer I got from the Vaio Support was to restore the system to a hardware profile before the problem started, which I didn't want to do. Having seen your post today, I just cleaned the drive optics with Apple's, brilliant Moster iClean Kit and pushed the laser head to ends of its span several times. The drive started working normal immediately! Well, I shouted at my VaioBoy for the first time which might have helped a bit as well! I suggest to anyone who is having similar problems to try the cleaning drill before trying anything else. Thank you again. A very relieved BrownPolar! |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> my vaio started playin up aswell, will write and read DVD's no problem but try to read a CD-R forget it, won't happen, funny thing is it used to work but now it doesn't, System restore doesn't work, 'incomplete' error comes up, uninstalling driver doesn't work, i even used the recovery tool to bring my computer from scracth and that didn't work, someone please advise me!! i need help oh yeah i've had my laptop 2 months now, FE31H if that helps with a DVD-RAM matshita drive UJ-850S |

I just completed a full recovery of the C en D drives, but that did not bring my CD-writer back to life. (Playing DVD's is no problem). After the system recovery I had to reinstall my printer and other programs, but for that I had to insert the original discs in the diskdrive! How did other people solve this problem? The only thing I knew to do is to buy an external drive to handle my disks. The laptop requires more than one lap now to be topped on... Pianostem, VAIO PCG K315Z |

Those DVDs are brand new, no chance that they are the reason of lagging. It helps when I uninstall DVD drive and restart comp. but I am not about to do that over and over again ? ! plz help... FE21b, drive: Sony DVD RW-G520A ... I will go crazy if I ll need to give my laptop to a service since its my second part of mine ... ---------------------------------------- ...a man from slovakia ...guess where it is... :) |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Now for example even restarting didnt help ... /Cry and whats interesting... if I download firmware for my drive that program shows: "No supported drive detected " ... and last edit: after carefully watching it I have noticed thats it only a sound that lags... it sounds like when its raining but you can hear it very very good... that problem appears in all dvd players I have. Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go down to properties. Click on the Advanced Settings tab at the top. You will have two Devices. Device 0 and Device 1. Please insure that the transfer mode for both is set to DMA if available. Also check that the current transfer mode is set to one of the ultra DMA modes. Some of these options might not be available, that's ok, please move to the next step. Once you have these changed click on the drivers tab at the top and click on the uninstall button near the bottom of this page. Click on the OK button on the next window. The unit will ask you if you want to restart the unit.Click on Yes. The unit might ask you to restart the unit again once it has boot on. Regards Sony Vaio Team |

Basically, the drive is accesible through the Command Prompt (copying files to the HDD works), and it will Autorun any media put into it without any problems, however it just will not open in Windows Explorer. I've tried all the ways of getting in, from straight double-clicking to sneakily selecting it from the address bar, but it just does nothing. As if I hadn't even tried opening it. The same applies to right clicking and selecting "explore". I've searched for updated firmware and only found a patch that doesn't work. Also tried uninstalling the drive and rebooting, still no joy. VAIO Hardware Diagnostics also told me the drive had no errors. Seeing as the problem arised just after the one year warranty expired, I tried and tried and eventually gave up. Just bought an external drive, which was cheaper than sourcing out another DVR-K15 and having the hassle of changing the bezel etc... Just wondering if anyone was up for a challenge really, suggestions? |

My first thought was that you had somehow installed the DOS drivers for the CD/DVD drive rather than the Windows drivers - which would explain why you can use the Command Prompt and why you can't see it in Windows. It would also be possible for your other (non operating system) software to take over when playing media - giving the appearance of normal operation in Windows. In the end I discounted this because of the Autorun and didn't reply. I couldn't see how autorun would select your player software in DOS. What drivers does it say are installed for the drive when you look in its properties in Device Manager? What I did was very simple. Just open the CD-DVD drive. There is movable metallic block next to the wheel onto which you push CDs or DVDs, and it has a glass lens mounted on it. Carefully push this block with a finger on its edge as far as it goes away from the wheel and push back towards the wheel, being careful not to touch the lens area. Do this a couple of times, and then push it as far away from the wheel to the very end of its path and then load a DVD-R or a CD-R and close the drive. If your problem is similar to mine, it should start working. The problem I had, or may have again, is that the block (laserhead) doesn't move freely far enough to read the header info on a DVD-R or CD-R. That is why I call this drive matSHITa! I recieved my ne VGN-FE31Z yesterday, and after watching a DVD yesterday, and burning my recovery discs this morning, it now won't work! I have a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S, that is apparently upto date with the drivers! But the thing doesn't work and is shrieked in the device manager, i've obviously unistalled it and re-installed it, but it doesn't work! Does anyone else have this drive/problem?? Everything on the system is standard i've only installed, mozilla, macromedia dreamweaver, fireworks, flash etc. Itunes and Photoshop CS2! so nothing crazy! ERROR CODE 39 IN DEVICE MANAGER Hi walms - I think you are in luck!!! A small Registry edit will fix your problem. Be careful and don't change anything else while you are in the Registry. 1.Click Start > Run and type REGEDIT and hit enter. 2. Navigate to – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and highlight it. Then locate UpperFilters in the right hand window, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created that will hopefully cure the problem. After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, you may possibly need to re-install your burning software – but not necessarily. The UpperFilters and LowerFilters keys in the Windows registry store information about CD and DVD burning drivers. When you add or remove CD and DVD burning applications, these registry keys are altered and they can become corrupted. When you remove the registry keys and restart the computer, Windows refreshes the keys. Some applications may use a different burning driver than the application you reinstalled. If the other CD or DVD burning applications installed on your computer cannot access the drive after Windows refreshes the registry keys, you will need to reinstall those applications before they can access the drive. Had to post to say that I've been metaphorically sitting on my Vaio for the last 18months with the DVDRW drive not recognising any discs I put in it, so hence not burning or playing anything....Had been in touch with online support half a dozen times, upgraded firmware, uninstalled drivers etc with no luck. I posted a drive relpacement question last week I was that desperate to get the damn thing working again. After reading all the posts in this thread I tried lens cleaning and freeing the moving bit in the dvd drawer, and bloody hell it's all working again. $2 (I now live in Aus) and 10 mins is all it took. I think Sony should advise people to do this on a regular basis! THANKYOU Brown Polar and Blencogo for your posts, you've solved my problem and saved me around $250. PS, I have nil techie exp, anyone can do it!  |

The error message is for a general write error or buffer underrun and usually means that the type of disc being used is 'incompatible media'. Have you tried a different make of discs? The files quoted are not specific but are usually associated with WinAmp or Sonic Record Now. Have you updated either of these recently? Another old favorite causing this error is Roxio. Do you have any of their Easy CD/DVD Creator software installed? I have a lot of problems with the DVD drive in my desktop computer (not a Sony, but bear with me for a little bit) for some time now, and the culprit is pretty clear to me. If you have installed any games on your computer, see if any of them was using StarForce for copy protection. StarForce is known to seriously hinder performance in optical drives, as well as affecting sytem stability and security, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starforce For me, StarForce has managed to render my DVD-RW incapable of writing DVDs, and reading them has become increasingly slow. It's actually been more than a year since I've been able to watch a DVD movie on that computer without having to copy the DVD to harddrive first due to the constant buffering and disc read errors. If you have any problems, and have any of the games listed here http://www.glop.org/starforce/list.php on your system, uninstall the StarForce driver by following the instructions here http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php I know this seriously improves optical drive performance as I have seen it work first-hand, but since I'm an active TrackMania Nations player I'm sadly unable to remove them from my own system, as TM:N won't run without StarForce installed. |

Everything worked, installed the drivers, but could not get some buttons to work properly. So I used my recovery discs to get the factory state back up again. Worked fine and shut down my vaio. Next day I start it up, and the dvd drive is not working. It's not showing up in windows explorer, with or without a disc in the drive. In the device manager it states the drive's name: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K16M But with this message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I deleted the recovery partition, so I can't reinstall everything, and I can't access the recovery dvd. I also can't find drivers on the internet. What can I do? *** UPDATE *** Fixed, thanks to this solution. When I reinstalled from the recovery discs, I also deleted a lot of software. A LOT! So also some cd/dvd recording software. Works great now. Thanks a lot! |

Full system recovery solved this but I have thought that it was caused by updated video drivers which I havent ever downloaded and installed again. Today the same problem occured, in ALL dvd players I have installed (windvd and win. media player). I am suspicious that this is caused by a conflict with a not-so-great sony drivers and a game I tryed to install: WoW:TBC, my dvd drive was behaving like crazy, speeding up and slowing down, I thought it was about to explode. Game couldnt complete installation and I had to manually turn laptop off. I dont know whether to restore system once again and install all my software again, it takes lot of time! then I will install one program and my drive wont be able to read DVDs ?! Should I contact service or it is caused only by a software. Any hints, ideas? ... Esupport told me to be sure that my drive is set to DMA but it has always been DMA enabled so they were absolutely useless and slow... I dont know how to solve this. My fe21b is half year old. Edit: Now I seriously need to restore my system again because I have installed "updated drivers" right now and DVD playback is even worse ... cool ... ---------------------------------------- ...a man from slovakia ...guess where it is... :) |

I've had it since August and initially it had no software to play a DVD movie on it. I installed PowerDVD and although it will play the sound is glitchy - like a stuttering? It's fine with audio CDs and also avi files too so it's not the sound card. It also takes a looooong time to write DVDs - I'm actually using Sony DVDs as well and it won't burn higher than 0.6x which is annoying when you have 4gb to burn! Also in games where there is a cutscene with a mini movie, the sound always become separated from the video, with the video seemingly running slower. It's almost like the sound doesn't pause when people are pausing in the coversation and it carries on regardless? I've made sure that it is DMA enabled, I've tried cleaning it and moving the lens back and forth to make sure that the ribbon isn't catching so I'm a bit stumped. I was a bit bemused also when I noticed that the driver for the drive itself is dated July 2001? Surely there must have been one for the firmware since then?! I also thought I'd mention that I find it surprisingly difficult finding sony drivers ANYWHERE online. Also SonicStage doesn't work very well and media center (the progam) is always coming up with errors. Don't know if it's related but I'm just having a moan! Other than that it's a great laptop and I'd really like to sort it out really. |

However, I must say that I am not sattisfied with drivers thingie (according to my previous thread). It is whole very annoying because it seems like some sony experts are unable to master their hardware. Media center is really buggy - it keeps wanting to debug when I go into it. For some reason when I got it, when I tried to play a DVD it said that there was no decoder on it so neither media player nor windvd would actually play DVDs. Installing PowerDVD enabled me to play them but I still have problems so I'll carry on fiddling with it I think. If I sort it out I'll report back. I know what you mean about the whole beginners thing - it doesn't bode very well! |

I tried VLC media player and it reported 450 lost frames in the space of 90 seconds of playback. However watching avi files on the hard disk is fine. PowerDVD seems to minimise the problems and gives the smoothest playback of the bunch, though there are still some problems occasionally with glitchy sound in places. |

I would try full system recovery. From my own experience I can also tell you that dvds are choppy in all players- windvd and windows media player but LESS in windvd. strange and annoying, makes a feeling that laptop you have bought has never been worth money you payed for it. This means that unless someone has managed to fix a problem themselves and are prepared to share it with us, we may not be able to help and you need to contact Sony support at Vaio-Link HERE I'm sure you both know that Windows has little or no support for DVDs. It relies on other software to be able to play and record DVDs. For this reason it is not a good idea to uninstall the DVD programs that came with your Vaio such an WinDVD as you are likely to remove a codec that Media Player is relying on to work. My DVD/CD-ROM is MATSHITA UJ-832D. i have alredy read the post http://www.club-vaio.com/clubvaio/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=36996 but this is my situation: 1- my firmware is 1.7 and there is not firmware update(not in vaio link and not in web side) 2- i dont have a restore date so i can not come back. 3- in Device Manager hardware DVD working correctly, no error code and no yellow triangle 4- Tryed already to uninstall the driver and rebooting the system, no good results 5- change the brand TDK, Verbatim,ecc. dont change the result. I can try only with two software. no good resulds. 6- i no want to try liquid lens cleaner, my vaio is still in garanty. Why should be a lend problem when befoare everything worked perfettly? 8- well i shoud becakup my data by DVD burner, but it doent work. Matshita UJ-832D replacement? Hello all! I have a broken Matshita UJ-832D drive on my Vaio VGN-S5HP. Sony refused to replace the drive under warranty (although the faultiness wasn't my fault, grrr..) So, I need to find a replacement drive for the busted one. Does anyone know a drive that would work as a replacement? I have never been able to find a disk that I could create the recovery dvd on. I would have sent the machine back in the first week if it wasn't that after installing Nero I found I could actually burn to DVD. However now I find that very few DVD films will mount in My Computer nor will DVD data disks. There appears to be no drivers or firmware for the drive. The one firmware download I could find perporting to be for said drive when ran errors "no such device found". I've tried all your solutions including running vaio recovery this made no difference. Its a shame that this has tarnished my opion of the VAIO otherwise a fantastic machine. To prove a point I took a couple of my "troublesome" DVDs and popped them into my 7 year old desktop and guess what they load fine. What is going on? |

This seems to be causing a lot of problems - I have gone back to WMP 10 which is not as pretty to look at but at least works OK. The only thing I can think of to try is: - 1. Start -> right-click on My Computer -> Manage -> Services and Applications -> Services (You may have to expand the window to the right to see what you are doing!) 2. Scroll down the list of Services and find IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and double-click on it to open the Properties box. 3. Check that the Service is not disabled and in the drop down box set the Startup Type to Automatic . 4. Click on the Start button to start the Service. 5. My drive and laptop: Pioneer DVR-K12D, PCG-K215B All of the basic maintenance, i.e. clean lens, reinstal drive, reformat entire system etc., are history. Some of guys may have read my "dying K12D drive" thread in the past. My drive has now reached the point where I really do need a total replacement. I've recently bought 150 Maxell DVD-Rs and after burning, they can't be read by my drive. Indeed, power calibration is a problem, but it's all in the laser. It's totally dying. I am thinking of taking this baby to "PC World", and get them to perhaps fix the laser if it's possible, or replace the drive with another, perhaps a crap Sony DW-Q... Problem is, the faceplate is a definite problem. Do you people know roughly how much it costs at PC World to replace a laptop optical drive? Of course, my warranty (expired in Jul 2005) is history now. On the other hand, I was thinking of buying the Pioneer DVR-K16 from "Play.com", and installing the drive myself. Is anyone an expert in replacing laptop optical drives? I hear it's pretty easy. It worked at the start because I managed to create my recovery discs on two dvd's but now it can only read a cd. I've tried backing up my work onto cd and dvd (both sony) but nothing seems to be recognised. For example the prompt doesn't pop up when I put a cd or dvd in. The driver is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ 850S. I've tried to follow Blencogo's steps of looking for any new firmware but there doesn't appear to be any. I've tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting but sadly it didn't work. I'm guessing the next step is either to pick a date and restore or to go for the full system recovery. The problem is I've done a ton of work towards our wedding plans before realising there was a fault and I can't really afford to lose all the work (wouldn't go down well with the future wife!) I have a 2gb mini sd with usb adaptor which I thought I could use to backup my system but I can't find it when I plug it in. I go to the memory stick drive (E: drive) and it just tells me to plug in a memory stick! When I safely remove the device it tells me it's in the G: drive but I cannot find the G: drive on my system. The problem is I'm no techie and to be honest I'm totally stuck. If someone can firstly guide me to get my stuff backed up on this memory stick and then offer me advice of how I might get this poxy dvd drive to work then I'd be most grateful. A couple of other points which may or may not be relevant. I tried to play a music cd on the machine but it came back saying: C00D11BA: Cannot play the file Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. Yet the sound works on the machine? I also seem to be having trouble getting windows update to read my machine now (this wasn't a problem before). It now just keeps searching with no end result? Read a post which talked about pushing the laser head back and forth and then leaving it in the far position away from the wheel and it worked - the driver wrote to my cd-r. The driver really is matSHITa! Now if anyone can tell me how to find this memory stick then I'll be a happy man! Also I read earlier that you need software to burn to a dvd (which I didn't realise - and answers why I couldn't do it!). Can anyone suggest some good software and where I get it from? The Memory Stick drive is the slot in the front of your vaio which only takes Sony Memory Sticks - it is not the USB drive you have connected. There are frequently problems with recognising SD cards - particularly big ones. It is usually necessary to format them with your Vaio. Have you got a small SD card to try and see if thet is recognised? They helped me to try out a number of things when trying to get the dvd drive working. You appear to dedicate a lot of time to helping people out so on behalf of them and me, thank you! Unfortunately, I don't have a smaller size mini sd card (only 2gb). I've always been able to easily locate it when I've plugged it into various PC's and laptops but not this time. To be honest, it normally stays in my phone so I'm happy to leave it there for now while the cd drive is working! I would appreciate your advice about backing up to a dvd+rw though. Am I right in saying I need other software to do this? I just assumed as the laptop came with a dvd drive and I had no trouble created the recovery dvd's that it would just work! You don't say what model Vaio you have so I can't look it up for you. If you post your Vaio model, I'll have a look and see if you have a DVD burner included. I had a quick look for my usb drive earlier as well and notice that I only have the following drives: C: D: E: memory stick (thanks for showing me where it is!) F: dvd drive That's it. Burning to DVD is different from using CDs. With the software you have you cannot drop files one at a time from explorer onto a DVD. (In Roxio you will find the 'Drag-to-Disc' feature greyed out - you have to pay more for that!) In Roxio Digital Home click on 'Data -> Data Disc -> Add Data' and drag the files or directories you want to back up one by one into the explorer type box. Instead they installed everything for me so it was ready to go from the time it arrived. It is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S. I have tried Uninstalling and Reinstalling it, as the troubleshooter tells me, but i still have the same error message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Last time, I phoned up Vaio Support, and to be fair they were extremely helpful, but unfortunately I had to completely reformat my drive, and reinstall Windows etc etc, and from then (about mid-November) until today, I had no further problems. As far as I can remember, this is exactly the same problem as then, and I am understandably unwilling to reformat everything again. Moreover, I am really unimpressed that I have had this many problems (the DVD malfunction isn't the only thing that's gone wrong) and I doubt I will buy another Vaio after this one. While the Customer Service is excellent, I feel the product should be much more reliable considering the cost and reputation of the brand. Anyway... enough of a rant! At first, everything was working fine, but lately my DVD RW drive started to give me headaches. I have a VGN-FE21H with Sony DVD DW-G520A drive. The drive started to read and write very slow. Max. read speed for CD or DVD was around 1,5 MB/s same with write speed (with buffer level jumping from 5 to 90%, using Nero). After a couple of days searching the web, I managed to fix this "problem". First thing I noticed was that everyone was telling ppl with similar problems to "go turn on the DMA mode on the IDE channel the drive was on" or "go update your firmware". The problem was that no matter what I did, the drive still wasn't using the DMA mode. Second problem was finding the darn firmware. On the Sony support, there are only MatSHITa and Pioneer FWs for my Vaio model, but it has a Sony drive (shame on you, Sony). I finally found a firmware version GFS3 (original in my drive was GFS1) at: ftp://ftp.vaio.sony.co.jp/pub/vaio/download/SP-011881-04/SOFOPD-01188104-UN.exe Install is in Japanese only... Follow the same instructions that can be found on the support page. Flashed my drive and it works fine now (DMA is on and everything, full read/write speed...). In case anyone wants to try the same, check your drive's FW version (you can do that with Nero Info Tool http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Info_Tool.html) There are two versions, one being called GFS and the other GYS. Update with same version only (ex. GFS1 to GFS3 or GYS1 to GYS4). You can find GYS4 here: http://download.opendrivers.com/drv/cd-rom/sony/GYS4WIN.EXE In case you want to, you can DL this tool and backup your current firmware: http://upload.cdfreaks.com/ftools/LtnFW.zip DO ALL THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have tried system restore to 2 differnet restore points prior to the update, but both times the restore has failed (unknown error during restore - very helpful!). I then tried updating the driver but Windows said the most up-to-date verion was already installed. I have then unisntalled the driver, downloaded a new driver from the VAIO website - which would not install - error = you dont have admin rights (I do!) or no device is recognised! When I lokk in device manager, the messgae is: windows cannot load the device driver for this device, the driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39). Any advice on how to proceed would be great, as my computer is essentially useless at the moment!! The only thing it could read was CD-Rs and pre-recorded DVDs. I even had to make my own recovery CDs from the recovery DVD 'cos it couldn't read the latter! Anyhow I got bored of Sony Support, who told me recover the system even though I'd told them that I'd already done so (do they listen?), and I fixed it myself. I bought a reconditioned drive for about £100 from an online store in the States. Bought a service manual from eBay and some micro screwdrivers from Maplins. It was a bit scary taking my baby apart, but I went slow, noted where all the screws came from and made sure I was well grounded to the unit. As a bonus I got to clean out two years worth of dust which made it run 10 times better (and quieter). If anyone wants any advice on doing it just ask. |

In essence this refers to CD error codes 19, 31, 32, 37 or 39 If Device Manager is reporting an error code of 19, 31, 32, 37 or 39 then it is probably a registry problem. I recommend that you backup your registry before proceeding, have a look here if you are unfamiliar with this. Then: 1.Click Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter. 2. Navigate to - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and locate UpperFilters, (if available) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if available) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created. After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, you may possibly need to re-install your burning software – but not necessarily. EDIT: Just realized that your machine is running under Vista. Check your recorder then restart the VAIO Recovery Utility." Needless to say, my CD/DVD is not in use. I've tested the drive and I can read a CD, no problem (I haven't tried a DVD yet 'cause I'm not sure which "DVD zone" I want to use). I've also downloaded and installed the latest drivers. I still get the same message. It's getting a little frustrating, especially since I've eventually come to the advice that I should run my recovery disc. You can achieve this without the recovery disks by tapping F10 at boot (when you see the Sony logo) and follow the on-screen instructions. This will access the hidden hard drive recovery partition and restore your machine to “as delivered”. This is the 'catch all' error code produced by the operating system when it hasn't a clue what the problem is and the drive just does not work. The most common cause is because the IDE cable to the drive has become disconnected but it could be any hardware fault. As it is almost certainly hardware - just check that the read head in the drive is not sticking. Make sure it slides for the full range of its travel. Your drive will have to be looked at/replaced so I would phone Sony Vaio-Link Support for guidance. They will probably ask you to carry our a full System Recovery before accepting the Vaio for inspection/repair - so get your data backed up!!! It will nor read any bought DVD's, along with any DVD's that were produced on the drive before the start of this year, (though I have been unable to find two disks I produced at the end of the year to verify this) though these disks were produced early last year. However a backup disk I created on a RW disk in March, can be read. All the disks that failed to read can be read on another PC. I did place a suspect DVD in the drive in February, that was scratched, but the drive did appear to be working after that. As I cannot read ant DVD's I cannot perform a recovery!!! Has anyone any ideas? |

And when i try and burn to DVD+R's 8GB i always get this weird error (DVD is protected) yet my friends PCs can burn to them easily without any problems? For example i have burnt 5 Cd's (same tracks, different burn method) Yet they always jitter/skip halfway through playing... As for Nero, it won't even attempt to burn correctly anymore, the buffer will always stay at 0% yet my burn will state "successful". Tried finding an appropriate update for my drive but with no luck. [SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A]. This sucks really bad as i have tried everything, i don't wanna send my laptop back because knowing what they did last time they'll just format my laptop send it back and replace the drive (but why the format? it isn't necessary...) |

Vaio VGN-C2Z/B Hi everybody! I've been reading all the threads and I have a similar problem with my dvd drive. One of these days I noticed that tere wasn´t any dvd drive in my computer, I tried to read a dvd and it didn´t work, after looking in all the places I coulde imagine, I didn´t find the drivers for my dvd drive (DVD-RW Pioneer K17). Could you help my find them?or find a solution for my problem?I read that one of you had this problem due to a disconnection of the the drive after some use, the laptop didn´t left home yet, I´ve been very carefull, but one of these days when I was opening it, it slided and hit the table with some strength, could it be from this? I aprecciate all the help I can get. |

PCG-7Q1M My mashita something (???) drive was working perfectly this morning but has disappeared completely, it still opens and closes, the cd appears to be loading as normal and the orange light on the drive flashes, but nothing shows up in my computer, device manager, vaio hardware diagnostics, nothing. Help!! |

Start -> Right-Click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives - is there a yellow warning? If yes, then double-click on the Matshita drive and tell us the Error Code - it will probably be 37, 39 or 41. sony vaio vgn- a417m Hello If anyone is having a problem with the DVD/CD drive on this LAPTOP .. please dont try to fix it. I tried , i crashed my computer,i lost data had all kinds of nightmares. if you google this laptop you will see there are Clubs trying to sort the problem out ! I have tried uninstalling the driver from device manager but it is always the sony driver that re-installs. Help would be apprecaited as I need to backup my data. Many thanks |

The Registry is the same in Vista and you need to edit the same keys as for XP. The following involves changes to the registry and I recommend that you either make a backup of your registry or set a System Restore Point. Then: 1.Click Start -> Type: REGEDIT into the 'Search' Box. 2. Navigate to – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} click on this and locate UpperFilters in the right-hand window, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created that will hopefully cure the problem. It appears to ne a SONY DVD RW DW-U50A. I now have lots of photos (yep - taken on a sony) and need to back them up. Also - any help on how to link by pcg with my VGN-TX2XP with i-link (since bluetooth wont work) would be most helpful ! |

Welcome to ClubVAIO sarahNich I presume that you are using XP. For backups to CD: Select Files to the value of 700MB and right-click -> send to ... "Your CD drive" Then navigate to the drive "E:\" or whatever yours is and on the left plane click burn. For backup to DVD: You need a 3rd party program such as Nero and follow the instructions to add files to a data DVD. Other method that you may consider is backup to external hard drive: You can buy external hard drives for about £50 and they can be used in the same way a USB memory stick can be except it has alot more memory. ---------------------------------------- |

Make sure it is not sticking anywhere. The WinDVD software works fine with no issues but both Media Center and Media Player have problems. On Media Center, it starts playing a DVD very choppy for a few seconds then goes fine. On Media Player, it tends to play DVDs choppy throughout and while it doesn't slow down to a crawl (like Media Center does for the first few seconds), the framerate can jitter and pause quite often. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks |

I have a VGN-FE21B running WinXP MCE and for the past 2 days have had problems with a DW-G520A DVD-RW drive, it shows in Device Manager with no issues and it shows in Windows Explorer. When I insert a CD or DVD (blank or otherwise) it will not see the inserted disc, the drive makes a couple of noises when a DVD is inserted but does not spin-up. I have uninstalled the drive from Device Manager, I have tried a Windows System Restore and this did not work, I tried updating the firmware from GFS1 to GFS3 and this has not helped. Short of doing a complete system restore I don't where to go from here, it was burning DVD's fine and just stopped working, no changes had been made to software on the machine so I do not think this is the cause. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance. |

I get the message: "Disc Burner or software not found" This appears in the top Itunes display window where the song title usually appears. I can play a retail cd using both iTunes and Windows Media Player. I have no warning signs on device manager. I have uninstalled Sonic Stage in case there was a clash. I have a band new AR41S with vista ultimate. I used the upgrade option from home premium [which the laptop was sold with] as I wanted the system restore feature which isn't available on home premium. I had no problem like this on my previous vaio [a wonderful workhorse]. I can't find a thread about iTunes. Is there a code word for iTunes? If anyone can direct me to a better thread I'd be grateful. Also is there anyway to get to the last post first. I can't find any controls and the acending/decending doesn't work. I had to go forward 4 pages at a time. This is the 2nd time I have written this post as the first disappeared when I posted it! Not user friendly, tips apreciated! Many thanks, in hope! This message often pops up with iTunes on limited accounts. Have you got Daemon Tools installed? If so you need to install the addon to Daemon tools that upgrades the SCSI connection and fixes the iTunes bug. it's called SPTD v1.50 X86 and it's at this site: http://disc-tools.com/download/daemon+sptd+md5sum Uninstalling Daemon Tools is not enough as it leaves a couple of drivers behind. By logged on do you mean logged on to the computer as administrator? If so I am logged on as Amanda and I think I am the administrator, I will double check. My iTunes account shouldn't be limited, it's lets me buy music! I also ran repair on iTunes and that didn't help. I don't think I have Daemon Tools installed. I read on web pages about that issue. If I have Daemon Tools I can't find them. Can you tell me where to look in case I have missed them. I looked in programs and did a search for them - they didn't turn up. To my simplistic mind iTunes can't 'see' the cd/dvd driver and I don't know how to direct it. The disc I used was a TDK cd-r80, perhaps I should try a different brand! I have recently updated my firmware via the support website to the latest revision (v1.10) so that I could burn dual layer dvds. Everything went fine and using Nero 7 I am now able to burn dual layer dvds, only the drive will write at a max of 2.4x which takes over 40 minutes! I have found a more newer firmware version (1.42) from another website, although i'm weary of using it because i've read somewhere that sony might not honour my warranty if i do. Another thing is that when i look up the drivers for my machine on the vaio site it lists more than one firmware for cd/dvd drive. There's an entry for my drive the k16, but there are also entries for k16vad and k16vas. I have a feeling that these are for different optical drive models, am i correct or can i use one of these as well? btw, i'm using Aone (RICOH) branded DL DVDs which can be burnt at 8x, so theoretically i should be able to do this, right? I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but sony's support is not really that good, vague at best! Thanks for any help |

To make he discs you will need 2/3 DVD+R or DVD-R discs. Go to Start and type Vaio Recovery Utility in the 'Search' box. Now the drive no longer reads CDs :< so i am sad. I have tried all advised in the first post ... BAR microfibre + lens cleaning liquid? please could someone link me to a webby that sells this magic juice. it is a AW-G540A drive. and when you insert a cd or dvd it makes a horrible noise, it sounds like the sound you get when inserting a scratched Floppy disk into an a drive.. any other ideas apart from the mircofibre? given that the laptop is soo new i would have not thought it would need cleaning. It usually means a cable has become disconnected or the drive has just died. It could be a driver issue. In Device Manager double-click the drive. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for this device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. It was unable to read any disc that I put in, so I tried uninstalling the driver in device manager as suggested, and to my surprise when I put in a copied cd it played (woo hoo! I thought). Then when I tried to (most importantly) make some backup discs it sounded all scratchy when I inserted the blanks and then said there was no disc in the tray so I tried again and it said cant recognize the disc (which was a dvd+r) any help would be appreciated as this is driving me crazy!!!!! Is this a problem throughout sony vaio or vista????? |

I have the same problem that Schrambo is having, but with a particular DVD+R, a TDK with the RW logo and 1-16 speed. When burning on ClickToDVD it reaches 100% and then reports an I/O Error, following which no computer can read the disk, but my DVD Recorder does to the point where the error occurred, exactly as Schrambo reports. I suspect this particular DVD type has a manufacturing error, because my DVD Recorder formats them in the same way as a DVD + RW and dubs in slow mode and at slow bit rate. I am much puzzled though by the ClickToDVD I/O error. Does anyone know why? Thanks |

I cannot read discs because the computer thinks there is no drive connected. I do believe that the drive is still in working order, because it whirs and spins when I open and close the tray. I've looked to see if there are drivers that I need to update...no use I was told by e-support to do a system restore...no use, in fact, Windows says that it can't. I am rather reluctant to try restore to factory setting because this will involve the use of, yes, DISCs. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'd like to have this resolved soon as the warranty runs out in days. |

No problem reading, and no problem in defining correct disk type with both Nero and Roxio. But when i start burning process it just breaks nearly immediately, this both with Nero and Roxio. Files i try to burn are mostly unprotected material, like private pics etc.. On Nero, the failure shows "Could not perform start of Disc-at-once". And i cannot clear out Disc-at-once option, it is greyed out. Roxio i deleted, to check if it was not conflicting. Was not. I read through this thread but couldnt see similar problem. I also have an external Writemaster USB burner which works like a charm. I have tested several brand of disks and several format (-R, -RW, +RW, dual layer), same problem. I did upgrade the firmware to UYS3 but no change. As master i have Toshiba MK1013GAS. DMA is on both for master and slave. No yellow triangle of warning in the device manager, as i said the drive is working very well in read mode. The DVD drive is appearing like "CD Drive (F:)" under My Computer. What puzzle me also is that several post deal with the secondary IDE channel on which the CD/DVD should be connected. The device manager ATA/ATAPI flick show only the Primary IDE channel, with uDMA 5 on device 0 and uDMA 2 on device 1 (for which by the way i own big time to Blencongo to have helped me raising it from PIO earlier this year!!). Dont know if that could be the root cause of evil, but maybe worth noticing. Any idea how to get my DW-Q58A to burn again? Cheers david |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> All this RESTORE WITH RECOVERY DISKS is all very well but BE WARNED it looses all your sony updates and you have to start again from when you bought your PC - all the windows upgrades, all the Office updates etc etc - and, if like me, you only have a telephone connection this takes DAYS AND DAYS - Sony should ofer something better - the PCG drive is FAULTY and always has been - they are at fault and they should offer something better that 'use recovery disks' - and be warned - dont bother paying for support - all they say is ...guess what - USE RECOVERY DISKS - well its like going back to DOS and the IBM-PC with 215K RAM - you have to upgrade from 00BC. |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> Solved Problems with Vaio - VGN-A197VP. Sometimes things are not what they seem to be. I got a video clip as the attachment of an e-mail. I got also an interesting dvd movie some days later. I was not able to play either one on my Vaio. And I have had problems with burning cds ever since I bought my Vaio. For safety copies I have used an external hard disk and another computer with Nero. (I have done all the updates except sonics - it does not install.) My Media Player version played only sounds of the video and no avi at all. So I updated it to Media Player 10. It did not help - I lost the sounds, too. According to the Windows XP Video Decorder Chckup Utility my Vaio decorders were not compatible with the synchronizations feature of Media Player 10. DVD 5 played only the music of the movie. I decided to test DVD Media Center (Corel free trial). A miracle happened. I was able to see my dvd movie and there were no problems with burning cds on previously rejected ones. However, even though the decorder problem was solved, Media Player 10 could not play more than the sounds of avi or wmv. I spent many long hours reading newsgroups of Vaio Forum and Microsoft. So many have had same kind of problems but if there was an answer or two (sometimes more), they did not feel right. I especially disliked the idea of clean install with all my other programs. I did learn a lot about Vaio thinking. While reading a Microsoft article about Media Players and changed screens I got the insight. I pushed one button to open my other screen. Media Player worked like an angel, DVD 5 and DVD Media Center as well. I finally noticed that I was able to draw things to the layout scene of Drag and Drop and forgave at least to some extend that I cannot use the burning feature of XP. I like the new Media Center and I'll keep it. It serves as a nice way to go through photo files (Pixela toy is not for me). I send this story because sometimes things are very simple but it can take a lot of time to find it out. I hope this helps someone. And I do hope that other and later Vaios have already solved the problem of burning alternatives. All the best. |

The following involves changes to the registry and I recommend that you set a System Restore Point. Then: 1.Click Start -> Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter. For Vista, type REGEDIT into the search box and open it). 2. Navigate to – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} click on this and locate UpperFilters in the right-hand window, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK. 4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created that will hopefully cure the problem. The drive is a Matshita UJ870QJ ATA Device. When i put dvd film or music cds in the drive it picks them up fine, when i put a data disc which i have burned with another pc it picks them up but when i try to install games it doesnt show that the discs are in the dvd drive. The games i tried were football manager 07 and 08 and some of the latest sims games. All these load fine on the other 4 computers in the house but the new sony is having none of it. I downloaded a countless number of updates when i first got it out of the box, 1 of which was a firmware update for the drive but still no joy. Device manager shows everything as working fine. I finally gave up saturday morning and rang currys back to exchange the laptop as i thought the dvd drive to be at fault. is this the case or will the games not play on the new laptop? thanks in advance Gareth |

My drive suddenly disapeared from my system - it's totally dead allthough it spins up but nothing happens at all. No program, the OS, nor the hardware diagnostics prog sees it at all, and I bought my VAIO 3 days ago! I have no yellow warnings under my device manager - there is NO DVD/CD/BD at all. I have tried system restore in Vista to no avail. Is it a common problem? /Jörgen |

Also burning and/or erasing DVDs works fine. As soon as it comes to burning/erasing CDs (CD-R nor CD-RW)it neither works for ROXIO (Roxio Easy Media Creator HOME Version: 9.0.148) nor the Windows Media Player (11-something). Whereas ROXIO provided some kind of error logs: Sense: 03 ASC: 73 ASCQ: 03 (Command 2A) ------------------------------------------------------- Px.dll: 3.4.36.500 PxAFS.DLL: 3.4.36.500 pxdrv.dll: 1.2.1.0 PxMas.dll: 3.4.36.500 PxSFS.DLL: 3.4.36.500 PxWave.dll: 3.4.36.500 pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3 MediaPlayer is simply frying my CDs. But I didn't give up, so I tried if there were perhaps a connection between a windows update problem (one update could not be installed) and the fact that my cd/dvd drive has simply totaly disapeared, even thoug it has worked normally a few days before. I think we deal with a vista problem of compatibility that sony should seriously review!!! I have a Sony Vaio VGN-C1S with Pioneer DVR-K16M DVD-RW (edit: with Windows XP) The drive has been working fine, but now it seems unable to read any DVDs. If I insert a DVD into the drive it finds it fine and knows a DVD has been inserted, but will not auto-start. If you click on the drive through explorer it gives no errors, but lists no files at all and shows 0 bytes free, 0 bytes used. It's seeing the disk, but not seeing any data on it. I've uninstalled it, and I've updated the drivers (to a 14-11-2007 version). I don't use it that much, so have no idea when it started to go wrong. That makes it hard to go back to previous setups. Thanks in advance for any ideas. |

Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> hi i jus registered and i am becoming a little worried/concerned basically i bought a bx51 and my brother installed microsoft office for me - it was needed! now roughly 2 weeks later (today) i was tryin to install some programmes using a cd in the cd-rom. usualy when you put a cd into any new computer or laptop it usually starts up automatically, where a window comes up giving you options on what you want to do! i can hear the cd spinning but thats all that happens! there is supposed 2 be an icon for the cd-rom when you go into my computer - its not there even when there is no cd in the drive. i know u have given a list of solutions but what would you specifically recommend for this problem much appreciated |

Start -> Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Is there a yellow warning ! Double-click on the drive and look for the error code - ? In vista everything worked prefect but now that i've downgraded (upgraded :P) to XP i can't read or write any cd's or dvd's. I insert the disk and windows notices that a disk is inserted put it can't read the data in it. Theres no problem with the when i look in the device manager. I have a VAIO CR21Z/R with a pioneer dvr k17 burner ----------------------------------------

Today I wanted to have a try and I found the drive can’t burn any disc, nor even read any burned disc! (they worked fine on other computers). There is no error code when I check with device manager. I checked registry, there's no 'UpperFilters' or 'LowerFilters'. I tried uninstall the drive and reinstalled, didn’t do any help. I tried different discs in several brands (TDK, Memorex, Kodak and Verbatim), none of them worked on this DVR-K17. Could anyone suggest what the problem is? |

Point is that device is called Matshita UJ-841S, very offten when i burn dual-layer or normal DVD using my vaio DVD-RW he cannot read them, other drivers got same problem. Whats with this hardware ? As for other people try to search firmwares on CDRInfo.com or if you speak polish: CDRInfo PL I doubt that there is network of those sites. Try adresses with you own country domain at the end ;) |

My CD/DVD works fine but when it powers off (usually default to power off in battery) when it powers on again the laptop will not recognise it. If I check device manager at that point, i get an error that the driver cannot be loaded because a previous instance of the driver exists on the system (something like this!) and the error code is 38. A temporary solution to that is to disable the setting on the power manager to turn off the drive when in battery, but I guess this defeats the purpose of having the ability to turn it on and off. Any ideas/solutions? |

It looks like the SONY DVD RW DW-G520A it came with has after intensive use over the past 14 months finally packed it in. Personally, I don't believe I'm facing a driver or software related issue, because I'm working in a dual boot invironment (WinXP MCE & Win2003 on a second partition), and the disc player now refuses to work with neither. Device Manager believes that the device is working properly, but that is just the typical windows nonsense one has come to expect. The fact is that after inserting a disc the tray LED flashes three times, accompanied by three audible mechanical attempts to start or read the disc, but that's as far as it will go. The thing is, I can take any desktop apart and put it back together with my eyes shut, but since this is my first notebook I want to make sure I'm not throwing money away by purchasing an overpriced SONY replacement, that is only going to last another 12 to 18 months again. So the question I'm facing now is, do I have to purchase a replacement of SONY to make sure it'll fit this particular VAIO model (VGN-FE21H), or can get a burner from a another source and can it be made (adjusted) to fit. Any advice would be most welcome & appreciated. Thanks. |

I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that I sorted my own problem... again. Got a replacement drive of ebay for £28. Adjusted the brackets, fitted my own caddy and with that I saved myself a sack full of money. Sony wanted me to send the whole unit (notebook) to them. Selling me a replacement drive was of course out of the question. Yeah right... are we all stupid or what? Thank you so very much for your advice & support. Ps. Btw., the drive is not hot-swappable, so lets be careful out there, ok. |

It has only ever recorded 2 things onto DVD-R, and forget DVD-RW.And I have tried every disc on the market, and what kind of an answer is this. This is a Sony for goodness sake, we expect more. My final conclusion after trying many attempts at resolving the issue is that this aspect of the system is basically rubbish. After spending nearly £2,000 on this machine I have not rushed to this conclusion easily and resent having had to reach it, but hey, life is short. My advice is to invest in a cheaper, generic system for DVD work, it just isn't worth the hassle. Just to say that I love Sony's stuff, every bit of decent electronics I own is made by them but they do make some very stupid and short sighted decisions, like putting a rubbish DVD package in a fantastic laptop AND LETTING MINIDISC DIE! Not sure I'll ever forgive them for this. At least Blueray is here to stay (isn't it?) Sorry for the rant. |

The problem I'm having seems to be related to similar issues spread over the last few pages of this thread. My disc drive won't recognise blu-ray anymore. there are no error messages, the drivers are all up to date, and when I insert a BR Movie DVD, I can even hear it being read. However, there isn't any auto-play and none of the DVD software I've used (WinDVD, PowerDVD) can recognise a disc. I can't explore the contents of the disc and double clicking just causes a loading icon on my cursor (and then nothing). Furthermore, if I restart my computer with the disc still in drive, the system will hang as if it is stuck reading the contents. I've got a blu-ray player that essentially treats blu-ray movies as blank discs. Every other type of movie/data medium works fine. My drive is a Matshita BD-MLT UJ-210S ATA I'm using a VGN-AR31S Vista OS Any help at all would be extremely appreciated. I AM DESPERATE . Thank you. |

DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEM Cannot find the CD or DVD recorder FIXED I thought I would post on how I fixed this problem with my DVD/CD drive randomly not working with various application yet working with others – this has happened from day 1 (about 9 months ago). I have a VGN-FZ11S and run Vista and had the problem before and after SP1. I had done the registry fixes and this seemed to work sometimes (depending on app). The other day I finally got around to burn the vaio backup dvds via the “Vaio Recovery Utility ” only to be told that "Cannot find the CD or DVD recorder. The recorder may be in use. Check your recorder then restart the VAIO Recovery Utility." I tried all the tricks but no go and was starting to think it was a sony hardware issue – especially after reading so many posts about sony vaio users who have the same problem. Anyway, a few weeks later I needed to burn a CD from an image file and fired up Roxio (for the 1st time). Suprise Suprise it could not find the DVD. I googled the error and was recommended to install pxengine3_00_58a.exe which is a patch for Roxio Easy Media Creator 8, but works with v9. I downloaded the patch and installed it. Not only did it fix Roxio, but it also fixed the sony issue of not detecting the DVD when I ran “Vaio Recovery Utility ”. I now hope the problem will never reappear. All relate to mediahub.exe. I have tried alternative software (Burn Aware Free) and it stops writing the DVD at the same point (about 3MB into the write). Please help as this is driving me mad! Unfortunately, if it is not present in Device Manager then it is probably a hardware fault or a bad electrical connection. Check again under DVD/CD-ROM Drives in Device Manager and if it is not there, you will almost certainly need to replace the drive or at least check the physical connections. Unfortunately, it is a big job as the keyboard and palmrest must be removed to undo the DVD drive retaining screw. Go to Start>Type Run into start search(just click run in XP)>click on run>type in regedit and press OK. Navigate to the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CURRENTCONTROLSET>CONTROL>CLASS In this folder you should be able to see the following registry key: 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 Click on this folder and on the right you may see upper or lower filters. If you see either of these filters delete them by clicking on them to highlight them then press edit>delete. Restart the unit after both filters have been deleted. If you see XXXXXfilters.bak DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES. Also the other advise already given applies: - Reinstall the driver in the device manager. - Check for updates to the firmware for the drive. - System restore if the drive has worked before or if a Windows update was installed and the drive didnt work after the installation. - Try different software to read/burn disks. |

I've a few system restores but I'm not sure exactly when the problem arose as I hadn't really used the DVD drive for ages, only until I needed to install from a disc. I can't even recall the last time I used the drive successfully but this is going back months.......may perhaps. I'm not keen on a full recovery......but I was wondering how can do a full recovery if the CD won't boot????? |

QSI DVD-RAM SDW-086 Read Problems It seems my dvd drive is unable to read brand new games dvd's such as 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X' and 'Football Manager 2009'. No error message is displayed you just hear the drive whirrrr up and nothing else! Windows explorer hangs if i try and browse the dvd. I have system restored the C drive and uninstalled/reinstalled the driver but still no luck. I can read cd's and older dvd's without any problems and indeed burn to cdr/dvd. These game dvd's are brand new with no scratches. Any thoughts? |

I read some of the previous posts and managed to tackle the problem by erasing the upper and lower filters. After that i decided to create a copy of the recovery partition of my Vaio, since i have lost the first one that i have created. However, the computer is unable to read an empty CD or DVD. Whenever i click on the icon of the disk (CD or DVD ) at my computer i get the message: 'F:// is not accessible. Incorrect Function' The Vaio Recovery Utility also prompts the message ' Cannot find the CD or DVD recorder. The recorder may be in use'. Therefore i cannot perform a format of the disk of the computer. On the other hand, by using Nero i can create new CDs, or DVDs. So the DVD drive has no problem. Something is wrong with the software. I do not know if this is important, but i mention to you that although i have Nero installed in the computer, i haven' t uninstalled Roxio which was preinstalled at the computer. I would appreciate any possible help. Thank you for reading my message. |

This can also be caused by the packet writing software within Nero called InCD. Try uninstalling this and rebooting. Do you have any virtual disc software installed, like Daemon Tools. I have in the past experienced some slight problems with my cd/dvd drive whereby it would not recognize disks. I would generally restart the laptop and all would be fine. However, it now does not recognize any CD's, it makes an initial sound and it continues to make this sound (it's the sound that is made when ejecting a CD). As typing this it has worked and then decided it wants to be uncooperative again so it's getting me even more wound up and rather confused as to what the problem could be. Grr. Anyhow, I have tried certain methods such as lense cleaning, deleting the drives and re-booting and then deleting the upper and lower filters, all of which have made no difference. According to the hardware manager there are no faults at all. I'm using a Vaio VGN-N11S/W - running on Windows Vista. I have a SDW-085 ATA Device. Not too sure if more info is needed but if it is then I shall provide it. I'll apologies firstly as my tech knowledge is pretty scarce, I tend to use the try everything method and then hope that something works but this time I am completely stumped. I cannot remember though if that was the case before the problem appeared. I am writing from an other computer, so i will tell you the letters of the drives later, when i reach the Vaio. I have the Nero 7 Ultra Edition. I have not found this InCd packet writing software withtin it. I do have Daemon tools installed. I will try this solution later on!! Thank for your reply. |

I've already uninstalled Daemontools. When I try to access the drive from My Computer, it gives me the error : E:\ Is not accessible. Incorrect function. I've already updated to the latest firmware but no luck. I've been looking to replace the drive but I don't know what kind of connections it has. NEC DVD-/+/RAM AD-7593A 8x/8x/5x Slimline is the drive I'm looking at. I know NEC is now Sony, but will this fit in my laptop and how much work is it to replace a drive. It was working perfectly until my computer automatically updated via the vaio website. Suddenly my DVD drive no longer works, the drive is no longer detectable on my computer, if I insert a DVD or cd it will not read the disc. I have reported this problem but no updates or solutions are available. Diagnostics say the driver installed is the most up to date driver, I do not have the option of rolling back to a previous version. Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 19. I have tried to uninstall the driver and download an alternative driver but this doesn't work. I'm at my wits end, nothing I've tried is working. Any suggestions? Thanks |

Staff did not ring me back - I've had to ring for updates. Updates are always the same - there is a compatability issue between the disc drive and the Microsoft disc. The ONLY solutions offered by sony are: Get back to Microsoft and find where the software can be downloaded from (with the possibility of download cost if download limits are exceeded). I dont have any sign like ! next my DVD rom in Device manager and When I try to burn dvds, the buffer bar fill 100% and waits for some time and they gives burn process failed. Its happend before and I have changed the regedits and then it was fine. Now I got the prob again. By the way My laptop configs: VGNFE41S model 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo Processor, NVIDIA Geforce Go7600 Matshita DVD-ROM UJ-850S Thanks for your cooperation and I appreciate your help. |

At my wits end after several system restore and still no joy I made the decision to do a C:\ drive restore to original settings and still no luck. I unfortunately I do not know what the cd/dvd rom make is as not at my laptop but I own a VGN-CS11S/Q. Any ideas? Or do you think it's a trip to the shop? Many thanks, |

It has no problem with dvd's and in device manager there are no problems listed. When a CD is in the drive it seems to try and read it but nothing happens. I've also tried reinstalling the drivers but no luck. |

I have reinstalled Windows XP followed by all the drivers of sony Vaio downloaded from Vaio website. every thing is working fine now except I have one problem which is that my DVD/CD drive (MATSHITS DVD-RAM UJ-850S) is now only reading DVDs but does not read CD's anymore. I think the drivers of DVD/CD drive have been installed by the window XP it self. I tried to locate drivers from VAIO's driver folder but couldnt find any. so I am letting it work with those default drivers' which cant read CDs Please help what to do :( NOTE: I had to format my hard disk due to a disk failure, and therefore I dont have any recovery parition any more.. I have BTW already tried the way to which includes removing Upperfilter and lowerfilter from rigistry, but that didnt work, |

XP needs additional software to burn DVDs but you have a CD problem. This sounds like a drive fault to me and you may have to replace the drive. A straight replacement can be expensive at about £150: http://www.server-parts.com/cd/parts/UJ-810B.htm But you can buy a good one to fit for about £25: http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/CD%2FDVD+Drives/Internal/IDE/LG+8x+DVD-RW+Slimline-Laptop+Black+(GSA-T20%2F40N)+?productId=31334 You may have to be inventive to attach the original faceplate to match your Vaio. I try to find a grabber which fits my notebooks. I read the DW-56A post but the models which may fit my notebooks are no longer available. I think to get the Optiarc AD7590A. Re: IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS> The Pioneer DVD-K17 that came with my VGN-FZ18L packed up last week. It could read CDs OK, but couldn't read DVDs or write CDs. I tried some of the suggested fixes (registry changes, reinstalling drivers, sliding the bracket up and down, cleaning the lens etc) but to no avail. So, I ordered an replacement drive from Amazon - the Pioneer KD-08 - for £27. It was easy to fit (15 mins). Just a few simple steps required: - Remove battery from laptop - Undo the 2 DVD drive retaining screws (as shown in previous post) and remove drive - Remove the 2 metal brackets secured to sides of drive with 2 small screws and attach to new drive - Remove plastic fascia from new drive (held on with 3 lugs) - Remove plastic fascia from old drive and clip on to new drive - Put new drive in laptop, secure with the screws. - Add laptop battery and startup! Vista found the new drive, and installed the drivers automatically. I now have a fully functional DVD/CD writer again! |

It reads CD's and DVD's that i've burnt fine, however when i try to play a film DVD i have no luck, it speeds up and slows down constantly and when i click it in my computer it ejects and says please insert a disc. I tried a few ideas on here to fix it but no luck so far, i tried uninstalling the driver and updating it, made sure that its on the correct dvd region, and i think the lens can move freely so i'm not sure what else to try, if anyone could help i'd be grateful! |

My G drive (MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-220S ATA Device) is recognised and properties for this include a Burning tab, however no program I have for burning will allow this drive to bun. Roxio EMC 9 cannot find a drive and WMP looks like its burning an audio CD then has an error for every file (Windows has chosen drive G as the default for burning and shows this as the only available drive). I have removed Lower Filters following using regedit as described above, and now no Upper or Lower filters now exist. I have also uninstalled the DVD/CD drive from Device Manager and rebooted to see if this would resolve the problem, however it hads not. There are no unknown or hidden devices found here either, nor any exclamation marks in yellow boxes. Within My Computer, I have a separate CD Drive (H) which when I right click has "Install or run program" as the first option, and on trying to click open states: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.". I have been unable to burn for months and restore points don't seem to resolve the issue either. Is there another solution that can allow my laptop (Sony VGN-AR51M) running Vista x32 SP2 to burn discs or even allow me to play CDs/DVDs again? Thanks in advance! Meant to add - Click to DVD BD also cannot find a drive. ETA - I can play DVDs via WMP and Blu-ray Discs via Win DVD, so playing CDs and any type of burning are what I am currently unable to do. |

problem well you may not know this vaio model VGN-FW41M because it is Europe only but im speaking in this board because my country's is inactive. I brought that sony model 2 weeks ago and it comes with Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S4 ATA Device. Suddently it stop working. Whenever i start up my pc, close the drive or put a CD/DVD it starts making a strange noise each 2 seconds until it stops and it does nothing. It is detected as "fully operacional" in device manager but the problem is that it says the drive is empty always even if there is some disk in it. P.S. ive tried system restore, deleting and installing drivers already |

Now when I load an Adobe DVD it refuses to read it or even acknowledge that there is anything in the drive (although I can hear it spinning up and buffering). Suggestions would be welcome as I have an urgent need to get photoshop loaded. This has never been an issue before and the drive seems to read other media without an issue. |
